Sofia Love

Sofia Love

We spent a week in Sofia, Bulgaria. It was rainy, it’s been getting chilly, and we decided to get out of the van, stay parked, and indulge in a cheap hotel for the week! Now, I say cheap hotel, I don’t mean cheap like shady, hourly rate hotel on the side of a freeway. Everything in Sofia is cheap, and we ended up paying 135 euros for a whole week in a decent hotel! It felt good to have access to daily showers, internet and electricity to charge our devices.

Large fountains are in many of the parks.

We’re in kind of a limbo state right now with our travels. We’re unsure what to do with our winter. Our van isn’t equipped to live in during the colder and snowy months, and while we have savings in the bank still, we aren’t quite ready to throw down on a few months rent somewhere near a ski resort. While that sound wonderful, it’s not sustainable. Especially if we’d like to do some more #vanlife adventures in the summer months. During our week in Sofia I applied to many international teaching jobs – from Cape Town, to Italy, to Amsterdam, to Zagreb, and many places in between. I’m even working with an agency that helps place teachers abroad. So far there haven’t been any bites. Anyway, I’ll keep you posted on any developments there.

Even the underground street crossings are beautiful and clean! Most of them have shops and snack bars as well.

We really enjoyed our time in Sofia. For a capital city, it’s really clean! Yes, we did arrive there from Albania, land of trash everywhere, but it was cleaner than any other city we’ve been in. We loved all the parks in the city. We liked the city so much, we were considering (even searching online) for an apartment to rent for a few months. We decided against it once we remembered that we’re not really that good at cities, and there are not a whole lot of outdoor activities nearby. Enjoy some of our pics from Sofia!

There are still (obviously) many drab buildings from recent communist times, but many are being painted to look a little more cheery.
